What is natural skincare, really?

A plain-language guide to what 'natural' means on a skincare label, what it doesn't, and how to read ingredient lists with confidence.

Natural skincare refers to products formulated primarily with plant-derived and mineral ingredients, with limited or no synthetic additives. There is no single legal definition, so reading the ingredient list matters more than the word on the front of the bottle.

How to read an ingredient list

Ingredients are listed in descending order by weight down to 1%. The first five ingredients typically make up the bulk of the product.

Is 'natural' the same as 'organic'?

No. Organic refers to how ingredients are farmed and requires certification. Natural is broader but still falls under UK and EU costmetic products so requires testing.

Are natural products safer?

Not automatically. Safety depends on formulation, dose, and how an ingredient interacts with your skin — not whether it is plant-derived. Cosmetic Product Safety Testing and Report (CPSR) is a legal requirement for cosmetic products in the UK and EU
